Fog machine, pulsating techno music, people in various stages of undress.

No, it’s not the go-go ’80s again on the Sunset Strip – and Robert Downey Jr. (version 1.0) is nowhere in sight. We’re backstage at the second annual Making the Cut live hair-styling competition at The Observatory in Santa Ana, a nightclub and music venue where six of Orange County’s top stylists are putting the finishing touches on their models for a show to crown Orange County’s No. 1 salon talent.

Edgy. Sexy. Not suitable for audiences under 17, including Kathleen.

Making the Cut, presented by celebrity hair stylist Scott Fontana in association with Cristophe Salon at Fashion Island (which Fontana owns), is all this and more. The competition is all about which stylist can create the most outrageous looks – and, in a timed 30-minute challenge – whip up a gorgeous ’do.
