Making the Cut is the industry’s first and only live hair styling competition, created and hosted by Scott Fontana, celebrity stylist and owner of Cristophe Salon Newport Beach. Making the Cut is a high-end, professionally produced event that features live hair cutting and styling on stage performed by leading stylists, a live hair and fashion show, and a renowned judging panel comprised of industry elite. The show is edgy, sexy and wildly entertaining.
Making the Cut was first established in 2013 in Orange County, CA, with the inaugural event hosting hundreds of industry professionals as they watched five stylists compete live on stage at Sutra Nightclub. With overwhelming demand and popularity, the show expanded in 2014 to host more than 500 industry professionals and consumers, six stylists, more than a dozen sponsors and a judging panel comprised of Scott Fontana, Laurent D. of Prive Salon, Leyla Milani Khoshbin of Milani Hair, and Raha Lewis of People Magazine.
The Making the Cut live hair show competition includes red carpet photos, an opening performance by Scott Fontana, small bites and appetizers, cocktails, a stage production featuring live cutting and styling from Making the Cut's six finalists, and a full hair and fashion runway show. During the stage production against a backdrop of lights and music, stylists have 20 minutes to create their best look in front of a live audience. Once the clock winds down, the stylists present their models' looks to the judging panel.
The evening closes with each stylist showing off his or her hair and fashion collection, comprised of four models total: one model styled live on stage, and three pre-styled models to complete the showcase. The judges make their final remarks, then award one stylist with the title of Southern California's Top Stylist 2015. The winner takes homes the title, $2,500 cash, and other prizes.
The live Making the Cut hair show competition is open to the public.
Now its third year, Scott Fontana's 2015 Making the Cut show will be held on October 5 in Los Angeles, CA, at The Avalon Hollywood.
In early 2015, Making the Cut opened its call for entries to invite hair stylists throughout Southern California to enter the competition for the chance to win cash, prizes, publicity and the title of "Southern California's Top Stylist 2015." Upon receiving all entries, the Making the Cut team narrowed down the submissions to 10 semi-finalists. The semi-finalists are asked to submit videos of themselves to show their personalities and their work, and make their case for why they should be named the top stylist in Southern California. From there, the six finalists are selected by the Making the Cut team to participate in the live hair show competition.
The finalists are given several weeks to prepare their collection, consisting of three prepared hair and fashion looks and one look to be completed live on stage, all done with live models. Each stylist is given 20 minutes to fully cut and style a model on stage. The panel of judges will critique each stylists' work before moving into the live runway show, when stylists will present their full showcase of five models dressed and styled according to a unique theme.
